There are different methods of installing composite decking. You can choose to build an elevated decking, or you can install it on the ground. Of the two ways that we mentioned, installing composite decking on the ground is easier.

What Is a Composite Decking?

Composite means mixture or a combination of two materials. Composite decking is a mixture of plastic and wood. The materials used to make composite decking are leftover materials in the case of wood dust and recycled materials in the case of plastic. As a synthetic material, makers of composite decking process it in a factory until it forms composite boards.

Advantages of Composite Decking

Easy to Install

One advantage of composite decking is that when you use it to build a decking in your back garden, you will find it easy to install. You can easily build a ground level decking or an elevated decking with composite decking. Also, you can work on the composite decking boards and cut it easily. Composite decking is easy to pre-drill when you want to screw it down to the joists.

Composite Decking Is Lightweight

Another benefit of composite decking is that it is lightweight. This means that during the process of building a decking with composite boards, you can lift the boards easily. Also, you can move the composite boards from one place to another quickly. This will reduce stress when you are building your decking.

Composite Decking Is Easy to Maintain

Easy maintenance is one key feature of composite decking. This is because you will not spend much cash on maintaining your composite decking. Aside from cash, composite decking maintenance will not waste your time and stress you out. What composite decking maintenance requires is cleaning with a cloth. Also, you can scrub your composite decking if you want to remove dust.

Different Ways to Build Composite Decking

We mentioned earlier that you could install your composite decking directly on the ground or above the ground.

Laying Your Composite Decking Directly on the Ground

Note that when you install composite decking directly on the ground, you don’t just lay the boards on grass or concrete. Instead,  you should build a small frame or substructure that you will arrange the composite boards on. If you have a back garden, you can install your composite decking in the open space.

Also, if you have a concrete slab and you want to cover it, you can build your composite decking directly on top. The process of installing composite decking directly on the ground begins with clearing the spots you will build the decking. After that, you can dig the holes that you will put the posts. The posts will support the frame of your decking.

For a ground-level decking, the posts should be short and close to the ground. The essence of using posts is to raise the decking above the ground a little to create breathing space and airflow under the decking.

After putting the posts in the holes, you can use cement to make it firm. Then you can start building the frame. Start by attaching treated planks from one posts to the other until you have covered all the posts.

After attaching the outer planks, you can start fixing the inner joists. You will need a drilling machine to pre-drill the joist before screwing them. Note the composite decking joist should not be more than 16 cm apart. This is to ensure that your decking will not carve in when people stand on it. You should use treated woods or planks for the joists and the whole substructure to last long.

Remember that composite decking is a durable material that will last for about 20 years. Untreated wood will not last that long so there is the risk that your decking will collapse if the frame rots off. After building the joist, you can start arranging composite decking boards on your ground level decking. This process of arranging composite decking is not tedious.

Just start from an edge or one side of your decking. If your decking is close to a building, you can start from the side and ensure that you lay the boards to be perpendicular to it. Arrange the boards until you have covered your decking.

Conclusion

Can composite decking be installed on the ground? Yes, you can build a ground-level decking with composite boards. You should ensure that you build a solid substructure before you lay your composite decking boards.
