If you are researching how to transform your home with cladding, you will inevitably come across the most commonly asked installation question by both DIYers and tradesmen: Can you screw composite cladding directly into a brick wall?
The short, tradesman answer is no. Absolutely not.
Brick walls are masonry and are rarely perfectly level. Fixing cladding directly to brick or gluing it to the wall completely blocks the crucial airflow and water drainage required to keep your structure safe.

Composite boards expand and contract as temperatures change. On average, a high-quality 3.6m board will expand 4mm to 6mm. Low-quality boards will expand much more (always check your supplier’s spec sheet).
Installing composite cladding is a straightforward process, but you cannot cheat the structural science. You can buy the most premium slatted board on the market, but if you screw it directly into flat brickwork without a breathable membrane and a ventilated batten subframe, it will fail.
