Composite decking will not rot like a wood decking when exposed to moisture. This gives plastic-wood decking an advantage over wood decking.

You might want to know why most composite decking will not rot. Take this as an appetiser that there are two types of composite decking. They are capped and uncapped composite boards.

Capped composite decking has an additional covering of plastic on top of it. This coating of plastic prevents vapour from penetrating the board.

Uncapped composite decking does not have the extra layer of plastic and might not be fully protected from moisture.

Wood decking boards are not protected in any way and will absorb moisture easily. This makes wood decking to swell and rot when installed.

Capped Composite Decking

Capped composite decking has an additional layer of plastic covering on top. What this additional covering does is that it prevents water or moisture for entering the board.

Note that the reason most decking boards swell is that they absorb moisture. If the board cannot absorb moisture, then it will not swell and rot.

The capped composite decking meets these criteria. That is why capped decking boards are a better option for a place that is exposed to water.

If you want to install your composite decking around your swimming pool, you should use it.

Also, if you want to build a decking in your garden, you should consider using capped plastic-wood decking.

Uncapped Composite Decking

Uncapped composite decking is unlike the capped composite decking. It does not have the additional plastic covering.

This does not mean that the uncapped composite decking will get damage quickly. What it means is that uncapped decking boards are well suited for a location that is covered.

You can install it in your balcony, and the roof of your house will protect it.

Although water or moisture cannot get into it easily like a wood decking, an uncapped composite board might absorb moisture.

Remember that composite decking is made of wood fibre and plastic. The wood fibre and plastic are mixed in a factory.

When the finished product is ready, it is then cut into various shapes that you can use to build your decking.

Now back to the uncapped composite decking boards. Since composite decking is made of wood and plastic, the wood part can absorb moisture. When it does, it might swell.

That is why the extra layer of plastic covering of the capped composite decking is useful.

Wood Decking

Wood decking is made purely of wood. Although some are treated with chemicals to make them strong, they are no match for the capped and uncapped decking.

When a wood decking is exposed to water or moisture, it will absorb it. This results in swelling of the decking board. After swelling, the wood board will expand and shrink as the moisture in it dries.

This shrinking of a wood decking makes the wood decking to warp and break. Wood decking can even rot if not treated properly.

All these make composite material to be a preferred choice when installing decking. Also, wood is not so good for an outdoor decking project.

Other Advantage of Composite Decking

Composite decking is more durable than wood decking. This indicates that plastic-wood boards will last longer when installed in your garden. They will not break or splinter as a result of prolonged use.

Aside from durability, composite decking is easy to install and work with. Plastic-wood is lightweight and can be hauled easily.

Composite decking has a beautiful finish.

composite decking will not swell

You can purchase composite decking of different colours in the market. Also, you can combine boards of different colours if you want a very beautiful finish.

Low Maintenance

Composite decking is very easy to maintain. All you should do to keep your composite decking clean is to sweep it regularly.

If your decking is stained with oil or grease, it will not absorb it. So, you can clean the decking with water and soap.

Composite decking doesn’t need oiling or sanding. Also, no need to paint or stain your decking. Your composite decking will not consume money to maintain like a wood decking.

Resistant to Insect

Insects cannot attack a composite decking. Also, mould and mildew cannot grow on composite decking. When a composite decking is exposed to sunlight, the colour will not fade.

This is because composite decking is resistant to the UV rays of the sun.

Most composite decking will not rot when exposed to moisture. This makes them a better alternative to wood decking.
