Installing a decking in your garden is a good thing. But there are several things involved when building a decking. First, you have to use a durable decking material like composite decking. Aside from that, you have to plan your decking well. Planning your decking involves preparing the area you will build it in. So, how can you prepare the ground for composite decking?

Types of Composite Decking Foundation

How you prepare the ground for your composite decking depends on the kind of foundation you want to use. There are two types of decking foundation. There is the elevated decking and the flush or ground level decking.

The elevated decking foundation will raise your composite decking above the ground and create space under. Ground level or flush decking is directly on grass or concrete. This decking foundation type is just some few centimetres high, and there are no spaces under it.

How to Prepare the Ground for Elevated Composite Decking

The first thing to do when you want to build an elevated composite decking is to get the tools and materials you need. After you measure the area, you will build your composite decking.

Step One – Prepare the Ground

You must have planned your decking well before you start getting all the materials that you need. This will enable you to know how many composite decking boards you will use to install your decking.

Since you are building an elevated composite decking, you will need to make sure that the area is levelled and cleared of all debris. You can add fabric to prevent grass from growing under your decking. After preparing the ground and it is balanced, you can move to the next step.

Step Two – Dig Holes for the Posts

Elevated composite decking must be raised some few inches above the ground. To lift your composite decking, you will need long posts. You must dig several holes around the area you will build your composite decking.

After digging, you will put the posts inside them and cover the holes with cement so that it will be strong. Note that the posts will serve as the foundation of your composite decking, so you must ensure that it stays stable in the ground.

Step Three – Build the Frame or Substructure

When your posts dry, you can attach the planks that will serve as the substructure of your composite decking to it. The planks should connect the posts.

After fixing the planks, you can add the joists to them. If you are utilising screws to fix the joists, we recommend that you pre-drill it before screwing. Ensure that the joists of your deck are spaced appropriately.

Step Four – Arrange the Composite Boards

After building the joists, you can start arranging the composite boards on them. You will need starter and intermediate clips for this task. You must leave a 5mm gap between the boards because of expansion.

That is all for elevated decking. Flush or ground-level decking is similar to elevated decking except that you don’t raise it above the ground.

Step One – Clear the Area

The first thing you must do when you want to install a ground-level decking is to clear the place of dirt and debris. Also, you must ensure that you level the area well if you want a straight composite decking.

You will use a shovel for this task. Also, if you must move earth to fill the ground, you will need a wheelbarrow. This will ensure that the ground you will install your composite decking is well prepared.

Step Two – Fix the Post

For you to fix the post that will support your composite decking, you have to dig holes. Note that this is a ground-level decking, so you don’t have to use long posts. Short posts will do for flush decking.

Some decking installers don’t use posts. Instead, they use cement blocks to support the frame they will attach the joist to. The essence of using posts is to attach the decking frame to it. But the point is that ground-level decking posts should be close to the ground. Then you can attach the frame and the joists.

Step Three – Fix the Composite Boards

To fix the composite decking boards, you should use either clips or screws depending on the kind of decking that you install.

Conclusion

How do you prepare the ground for composite decking? To Prepare the ground, you will build your decking; you must clear it and remove debris. After, you should level the ground before you start building your decking.
