Composite fences can get damaged over time as a result of external factors. When your fence appearance is distorted, you can restore the composite fence.

Note that the external factors referred to here can be mould growing on your fence. Mould growing on a composite fence! Yes, composite fences are resistant to mould or mildew.

But mould can still grow on it. That is if leaves and twigs from trees are left to decay on the composite fence. When this happens, the mould will distort the spot that it grows on.

Also, if something should scratch the surface of your composite fence, the spot can absorb water and become a breed space for mould. Another external factor is a stain from oil or grease. 

Oil and grease cannot penetrate a composite fence because of their capped surface. But like mould and mildew, they can be absorbed if there are scratches on your fence.

When this happens, the oil can only be removed by restoring the surface of your fence.  How you restore your fence depends on what you want to remove. 

How Do You Restore Composite Fence?

Scrub Your Wood-Plastic Fence

Scrubbing your composite fence is one way to restore the surface. This is feasible if there is dirt or oil stain on your composite fence. 

Also, when you remove the mould from your fence, and you discover that the colour is still good, you have to scrub the fence.

Scrubbing is done with a soft brush and soapy water. The area should be scrub gently along the grain of the fence so that you won’t destroy the fence panel.

After scrubbing the fence, you can rinse it with water. Rinsing can be achieved with a hose when water is sprayed on the fence. 

If there are hard stains on your fence, you can use vinegar-water, and sprinkle baking soda on the affected part of the fence. Also, if you spill paint on your composite fence, you can use Krud Kutter to remove it. 

Paint Your Wood-Plastic Fence 

Additional way to restore your composite fence is by painting it. Painting is an alternative to contemplate when the surface of your fence is badly damaged.

If there are scrapes on the texture and you wish to hide it, then you should paint it.

Paint can also be applied when mould has destroyed the surface of the fence. Although composite materials like a composite fence are not made to be painted, you can nonetheless paint it. 

How to Paint Your Wood-Plastic Fence 

Step One – Remove Plant and Other Structures

Removing plants and other structures that are close to the fence is very crucial when you want to paint your composite fence. This is so that the paint will not spill or splatter on them.

If the structures cannot be removed, then you must cover the surface of the structure with something. 

Step Two – Clean the Fence

Cleaning the fence is something to do after you have removed the plant from the side. This is achieved by spraying water on it with a hose. Be certain that all dirt is removed so that sanding the fence will be easy.

Step Three – Sand the Fence

You have to sand your wood plastic fence so that you will achieve a very smooth surface. This must be carried out by sanding along the grain of the fencing panel.

The tool for this task is a sandpaper that is 240-grits. After sanding, you should wipe the dust with a broom and spray with water.

Step Four – Prime the Fence

Now that the fencing panel surface is smooth, the next thing to do is to prime it. You should select an acrylic latex exterior primer. 

Then, pour the latex primer in a bucket and apply it along the length of your composite fencing panels. You should utilize a roller with a long handle so that the task will be achieved quickly.

Step Five – Paint the Fencing Panel

After the primer has dried, you can commence painting your fence. Paint should be carried out along the grain of the fencing panel.

You should ensure that you use high-quality latex paint for outdoor painting.

Also, you can give the fencing panel more than one coat of paint depending on your taste. Then, you should wait until the fence dries.


How to restore the surface of your composite fence is easy. You can scrub the surface with a brush and soapy water. Or, you can give the badly damaged surface a good painting.
