The reason for this is that during manufacturing, the core is wrapped in a tough PE (polyethylene) layer. This shield completely blocks moisture absorption, creating a highly durable board with exceptional resistance to fading and staining.

  • Maintenance: Ultra-low. It only requires a light seasonal wash to remove surface dirt and dust. Because the internal wood fibres are completely sealed behind the PE layer, the board will not suffer from tannin bleeding, ingrained mould, mildew, or stubborn stains.
  • Expected Lifespan: With basic care and correct installation gaps, a high-quality capped board is engineered to last 25 to 30+ years without ever losing its structural integrity or rich colour.

The Quality Trap: Why Do Some Boards Fail?

Because composite cladding is in high demand, many budget suppliers have flooded the market with poorly formulated products. Here is what you need to look out for:

  • HDPE vs. LDPE Plastic: High-quality boards use strong HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene). Cheap boards use LDPE (Low-Density Polyethylene). To the naked eye, they look identical. However, LDPE boards will suffer from severe expansion, cracking, and total failure within 2 to 5 years.
  • The Expansion Rate: In the UK climate, a high-quality composite cladding board should have an expansion rate of 4mm to 6mm.
