Installing a beautiful decking like composite decking in your home is a good idea if you want an extra space outside your home. A durable composite decking will last longer and provide a surface where you can carry out your outdoor activities. You can party on your composite decking and be sure that it will withstand the weight of people standing on it. One thing that can hinder outdoor activities on your composite decking is if the surface is slippery. If you have a slippery decking, you can make it less slippery. This write-up explains how homeowners can make their decking less slippery.

Why Does a Decking Become Slippery

Decking can become slippery for several reasons. If food or organic matters should decay on the surface of your decking, the spot will become slippery. Also, some deckings are not slipped resistant.

Wood or timber decking is one such example of a decking that is not slippery. The surface of wood decking becomes wet quickly when rain falls on it. Also, mould and mildew can grow on the surface of a wood decking.

Aside from that, wood decking does not have the non-slip surface of composite decking. Now let’s consider composite decking. One good aspect of composite decking is that its surface is well-engineered to be slip-resistant. Composite decking is a synthetic material that has two types of surface texture.

There is the wood grain composite decking and the grooved surface composite decking. The wood grain composite decking has a coarse surface texture that provides friction for your foot when you walk on it.

Grooved surface composite decking has tiny lines that run from one edge of the decking to the other. The lines are positioned side by side so that when you walk on your composite decking, it will provide friction for your feet.

This makes composite decking the best non-slip decking material that you can use to build a patio. But composite decking can get slippery even though it is engineered with an anti-slip surface. This can happen if you leave food to decay on your decking.

When this occurs, organic matter will grow on the top of your composite decking. This will make the composite decking to be slippery. Another reason composite decking can be slippery is if mould and mildew thrive on it.

Note that composite decking is naturally resistant to mould growth. But if you fail to maintain your composite decking, mould or mildew will become a problem.

Preventing a Slippery Surface

One way to make your composite decking surface less slippery is by maintaining it. You have to clean your composite decking regularly when you see dirt on it. You should remove leftover food from the top of your decking as soon as it drops on it. Also, if your decking surface becomes wet, do not leave it so that it becomes damp.

Apply Anti Slip Product

If your composite decking surface is slippery, you can make the high traffic area on your decking less slippery. There are lots of products that you can apply to your composite decking that will make the top less slippery. You can also think of using self-adhesive coarse grit to make the surface of your decking coarse like the surface of sandpaper.

Remove Mould and Mildew Immediately

If you discover mould and mildew growth on the surface of your composite decking, you should take steps to remove the mould and mildew.  Note that when mildew grows on the surface of your composite decking, it is the mildew that will become slippery. So, when you walk on your decking surface, and you step on the mildew, you will slip and fall.

That is why you must remove mould or mildew quickly. To remove mould, you must look for a brush that is soft and soapy water. Then you must scrub the top of your composite decking till you have removed the mould. When you have removed mould and mildew, your composite decking will become less slippery.

Remove Algae from the Surface

Algae is another thing that can make a decking slippery. Algae thrive in damp condition. So, if you install your composite decking in a wet area, the environment will be damp and can affect your decking. You have to check your decking surface regularly to ensure that algae are not on the surface. If you find algae, you should clean it with a brush like you will clean mould.

Conclusion

You can make your decking surface less slippery by cleaning it regularly. Make sure that you don’t let organic matters decay on the surface of your decking. Also, you should remove mould and mildew from the surface.
