It is ok to search for the types of decking material that last the longest. There are several types of decking being sold in the market.

Selecting the perfect decking material can be confusing if you don’t know how to.

Decking is made of different materials that make them unique. For example, there are wood decking, composite decking, PVC decking, and aluminium decking.

Each decking type has its own attributes that make it unique. Also, all the decking types are durable.

But some decking, like composite decking and PVC, is more durable than wood.

Some decking material requires high upkeep, while others require low upkeep. The different decking materials will be considered in this article.

Wood Decking

Wood decking is made with natural wood. There are the pressure-treated wood and the hardwood decking.

Wood decking is favoured by most homeowners because of the traditional wood look.

Pressure-Treated Wood Decking

Pressure-treated wood is made from trees like pine. The pine is then treated with chemicals at high pressure.

The essence of pressure treating the wood is for it to resist rot, fungus, and insects like a termite.

One advantage of pressure-treated wood is that it lasts longer than an untreated wood decking.

So, when decking is built with this material, the owners will enjoy it.

Hardwood Decking

Hardwood decking is unlike the pressure treated wood in that it is made of hardwood like cedar and redwood. This decking material does not need to be treated because it is strong.

Using the hardwood decking is a better option to pressure-treated wood.

Downsides of Wood Decking

The downside of wood decking is that it requires maintenance. Maintaining a wood Decking is also expensive because you will buy the materials that you will use.

Also, maintaining this decking type is laborious. You have to sand it, oil it, and then paint or stain it regularly. What it implies is that if you don’t do it, your decking will not last.

Wood decking is not resistant to water and other weather elements like the sun’s rays.

When a wood decking absorbs water, it will swell and rot. Besides, wood decking is prone to warping and will splinter.

Composite Decking

Composite decking is gaining momentum, and it is the preferred alternative to wood decking.

This decking type is also known as plastic-wood decking because it is made of wood fibre and plastic.

decking material that last the longest

Plastic-wood decking lasts longer than any other decking types, and it is very easy to maintain. There are several types of plastic decking.

You can get the grooved and ungrooved decking. Also, there is capped and uncapped decking.

There is the hollow and solid composite decking, in addition to the ones mentioned above.

One benefit of composite decking is that it lasts longer than wood decking. Composite decking is very strong, and its strength makes it durable.

This decking material will last long because it is resistant to weather elements. Also, plastic-wood decking will not absorb water and swell like a wood decking.

Again, composite decking will not shrink or splinter when used for long.

More so, composite decking will not rot, and it is resistant to insect attack. This implies that termite will not destroy your composite decking.

Also, the colour of the composite decking will not fade when exposed to sunlight.

 Downsides of Composite Decking

The disadvantage of composite decking is that it is more expensive than wood decking.

PVC Decking

PVC decking is like composite decking because it lasts longer than wood decking. The disparity between composite decking and PVC decking is that PVC is made of plastics only.

Like composite decking, PVC is stronger and more durable than wood. This makes PVC a better decking option.

Downsides of PVC

The disadvantage of PVC is that it is very expensive. It is even more expensive than composite decking. Also, PVC cannot be made to look like wood.

Conclusion

The decking material that lasts the longest is composite decking and PVC decking. Composite decking is preferred to PVC because it can be made to look like wood.
